Apple Pies made without pastry

apple piesDid you know you can make Apple Pies without having pastry? I’m willing to bet that you have all the ingredients needed in your food cupboard or pantry too!

These are simply out of this world and so easy to make. Preparation time is around 40 minutes (including chilling), cooking time around 10 mins for the apples and then 15 – 20 mins for the actual pie. I LOVE apple pies – I don’t make them nearly enough and I thought I would show you how to make them without having pastry. Of course, you can substitute the apple with any other fruit – why not try Banana with some white chocolate, or America’s favorite – blueberry! You can even use a pie filling if you wish. The recipe will lend itself to a variety of different fruits etc. But today it’s my favorite – Apple!

Ingredients to make apple pies without pastry

  • 1 egg – whisked
  • 8 flour 6″ tortillas
  • 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup of white sugar
  • 3 tsp Cinnamon
  • 5 apples
  • 1 tbsp of Butter

How to make these delicious Apple Pies

Peel and chop the apples into 1 cm chunks (leaving the core). In a pan, add 1 cup of water, add the apple together with a small amount of the Brown Sugar and Cinnamon. Bring to the boil and simmer for about 10 minutes until the apple is nice and soft. Once softened, drain the apple and get rid of any excess water, place back in the pan and stir in the butter until completely melted and mixed with the apple. Now we have to build our pies. Take a Flour Tortilla and using a pastry brush, brush the egg around the edge of the Tortilla, about 1 CM in width. Place a small amount of the apple into the middle of the Tortilla, don’t be tempted to add too much, otherwise, you won’t be able to seal it. Now fold the Tortilla and press the edges together to ensure a tight bond, working it until fully sealed tight. Repeat for the other pies. Place them on some parchment paper on a cookie sheet and refrigerate for 30 mins. This is important as it will allow the egg to bond the Tortilla halves together.

While they are being chilled, blend the rest of the sugars and cinnamon on a plate. After chilling, coat the tops of the pies with the whisked egg and sprinkle generously with the sugar mixture. Now, don’t be tempted to dip the pie into the sugar, otherwise, it will clump the rest of it. Then bake in the oven at 375F for around 15-20 mins until they are puffed up and golden brown. Serve with your favorite ice cream or better still English Custard.
