Tip Tuesday: Keeping Strawberries Fresh

strawberriesToday’s Tuesday Tip

Hey everyone and welcome to Tip Tuesday’s each week. Yep you guessed it on a Tuesday, GrubandBooze will be publishing one short tip related to food or of course booze – what else!

Keeping Strawberries Fresh

How many times have you gone to get Strawberries from the fridge only to find they have either gone mushy or worst still have developed mold. Below are a couple of tips to try and maximize the freshness of strawberries. In theory, they could last up to two weeks in your fridge.

Method one is to wash them in a vinegar bath. This could enable you to have fresh strawberries for up to two weeks – not in our house though – we eat them too quickly! Fill a measuring cup with 1/4 cup of white vinegar and 1 & 1/2 cups of water. You may need to make more vinegar/water depending on how many strawberries you are going to soak. Soak them for 5 minutes before thoroughly rinsing them in cold water. Then thoroughly dry them with kitchen paper. To store them, take a large container and line it with kitchen paper. Store them with the lid of the container slightly open in the fridge. The vinegar bath destroys all the toxins on the strawberry that lead them going moldy.

The second tip (two tips this week) is to cut the stalks off, then store them stalk end down in an airtight container lined again with kitchen paper – each one needs to touch to paper. They should last around a week using this method.

Lastly, do not simply wash them in water and put them in the fridge wet, they will absorb the water and rot quickly.
