My wife’s Book Club experienced this meal and it went down as a massive hit, with them all asking for the recipe. The Thai Fragrant Beef Stew recipe is the type of recipe that can be handed down from generation to generation and I guarantee that it won’t age. It’s one of those timeless classic recipes.
As you cook this, the delicious smell of braised Beef, Five-spice, Cinnamon and Star Anise permeates the kitchen and leaves your taste buds wanting to delve in and gobble it all up. If you don’t fancy this recipe then check out my Beef in Beer recipe.
So let’s start off with the ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2lbs Beef (diced)
- 2tsp Five Spice
- 3 Star Anise – whole
- 2 Cinnamon Sticks
- 2tsp Chilli flakes
- 2 crushed Garlic cloves
- 3tbs of Soy Sauce
- 650ml Beef Broth
- 2 Red peppers
- 1 Large Onion
- 2tbs flour
Serve this with some Basmati or Thai rice cooked with a few lime leaves and garnish with plenty of lime quarters.
How to make the Thai Fragrant Beef Stew
In a slow cooker add all the ingredients apart from the onion and beef. Stir until well blended. In a frying pan, add a little olive oil or butter and sear the beef all around to lock in all the juicy goodness (it also helps hold the beef together during the cooking process). Once seared, add to slow cooker. Then in the beef juices, add the onion and gentle soften (they will start to go opaque). Once softened, add to slow cooker and stir once more until everything is combined. Put the lid and cook on high for 4 hours, or low for 8 hours. I found the longer you can cook it the better.
