Baking powderHow to tell if your baking powder is still fresh? Hey everyone and welcome to Tip Tuesday’s each week. Yep you guessed it on a Tuesday, GrubandBooze will be publishing one short tip related to food or of course booze – what else!

How to tell if your baking powder is still fresh

Did you know that baking powder is used to increase the volume and lighten the texture of your baked goods? It works by releasing carbon dioxide gas into a batter or dough, causing bubbles in the wet mixture to expand and thus leavening the mixture or otherwise a rising agent.

Having baking powder that is fresh is essential to ensure that it does its job. If you added baking powder and your baked goods didn’t rise as expected when baked then the chances are the powder was not fresh enough.

There is a quick way of finding out if it’s still fresh enough to be effective and not ruin the baked goods that you worked so hard to create.

All you need to do is add a teaspoon of the baking powder to water. If it fizzes, then it’s still fresh. Dump it, if it doesn’t fizz and open a new one otherwise you will be disappointed with the outcome. If stored properly it should last around nine months once opened.

P.S  you can use the same technique for Baking Soda too…
